Today is Pride. I have dressed accordingly.
Now to make some caramel shortbread and attend a house party.
Not sure whether going to Pride tomorrow or not.
I have no one to march with. Think I might just drop into my friend’s Pride party tomorrow evening.
First time I haven’t attended Pride since my first time 6 years ago.

Just found out about Tom Gabel coming out as trans
And how she’s now going to go by Laura Jane Grace and stay married to her wife Heather. This makes me happy.
I was actually thinking a few weeks ago about how there aren’t really that many LGBT musicians in the punk scene (admittedly, there is the queercore scene, but that is undeniably tiny). There are a bunch of bands that are “pro-gay”, but nothing really goes much further than that (which is why Rise Against’s song Make It Stop was basically going into uncharted territory).
Depending on which sun-genre of punk you’re going into, you’ll find very different situations in terms of both the artists and the audience - ranging from open homophobia in some punk scenes to some rather androgynous band members in others. But overall, the punk scene isn’t exactly the gayest place you could be in. I mean, there’s the stereotype of girls into punk being “butch” or gay, but people tend to assume that most males in the punk scene are just manly as fuck and could never be gay and of course they could never be feminine in any way and definitely aren’t transgender.
And that’s why I’m glad that Laura finally came out after years of dysphoria and confusion. Unlike me, most people who listen to punk don’t find themselves pondering the concepts of LGBT people and punk people in the same context. And now, if they’re in any way interested in the band Against Me!, then they’ll have to.

Really though. Really.
Things that have happened to me in a gay bar:
Guy 1: just fucking stands there watching me and K dance for like 10 minutes.
Assume guy 2 is gay. Dance with him. 3 minutes later lol NOPE he grabs my ass.
Standing outside smoking. Friend goes back in the club. I follow him a minute later and a guy standing at the door poses as a bouncer doing a spot check, basically feels me up.
THIS IS NOT COOL
On the other hand, I have straight friends who I’d like to be able to take clubbing with me who aren’t like this. However, if I tried I know the LGBT crowd at my uni would block them out the instant they found out they weren’t queer.
Because we don’t want to kick straight people out of gay clubs. We really need to find a way of removing the complete dickheads.

Trigger warning for transphobia and augh
A couple of people from the show My Transexual Summer came to talk to us at Uni on Thursday. They were awesome and it was a great talk, but some of the audience members made me want to slam my head against the desk.
In particular a woman who had run for SU president last year. She has a bad history for saying really ignorant things. She claimed LGBT people don’t need union representation, and after this caused outcry she tried to backpeddle by saying “oh I don’t mind gay people if they don’t try to rape anyone”
I KID YOU NOT
She started out by stating “well I didn’t watch your show but I think that you look really great. You look just like a real woman and you look just like a real man”
Cue entire (mostly LGBT) audience cringing in their seats.
Later she commented during a discussion about surgeries, saying “if you have surgery, you are giving up your fertility, so why should you have the right to adopt?”
The room exploded, the best response was a “THE FUCK!” coming from the person sitting behind me. Somebody made an intelligent statement which was pretty much “lolno you’re wrong” and everyone applauded that.
It just blows my mind that people still think like this.
I wonder why she was there, we think she was trying to educate herself. If so I’m kinda glad that I happened in an environment where there was enough of us to give her the kind of feedback she should get when she airs opinions like that.
So when K was in Tesco picking out some flowers for me yesterday (yeah, aww!), some random man sidled up to her and said “so, what lazy bastard sent you to get those?”
She was all “I’m sorry, what?” and confused, and he clarified: “Well those are obviously for a girl so a bloke must have sent you out here to buy them to give to his girlfriend”.
She responded “er no, they’re for MY girlfriend”.
The man did a double take and then spat out
“But you’re way too pretty to be a dyke!”.
She rolled her eyes at him, grabbed her flowers and stalked off, then totally cracked up laughing one aisle over :P
